The long average life expectancy of Japanese people (80.98 years for men/87.14 years for women) makes many people assume that Japanese people are healthy.

Whether the population is healthy or not should be determined by “healthy life expectancy.” Healthy life expectancy is about 9 years shorter for men and 12 years shorter for women compared to the average life expectancy. This is because Japan has the highest number of "bedridden people" in the world too.

The number of bedridden elderly in Japan is three times greater than in the UK, five times greater than in the U.S., and ten times greater than in Sweden.

This is caused by Japan's overly generous social security system and long-term care. In other countries, hospitalization (due to sickness etc.) lasts approximately 10 days or less, whereas in Japan it can last up to 30 days.

In addition, the aging population has led to an increase in the number of nursing homes, and each facility is offering generous hospitality to attract more customers. This leads the elderly to stop walking and getting around on their own, resulting in them aging quicker.

I believe that many people are saved by Japan's welfare system, but the main goal must be to encourage people to become self-reliant.
